INSTRUCTIONAL WRITING/SPORTSMEN

In this task we focused on instructional and report Writing. Our students studied a range of different Olympic sports and Olympic athletes. Children investigated a range of different sports, wrote rules or instructions, researched and reported on the history of the Olympics.

New skills were practised during this task, which was rolled out throughout the Year 3 and 4 cohort (approximately 75 children).  In making notes to support the planning and then the writing of instructions to share with partner schools, the children were required to pay particular attention to identifying key points, using specific vocabulary and keeping language succinct and accurate.
The research activity encouraged empathetic behaviour since the children needed to consider what their audience would want to know about British Olympiads.  Once again this awareness of audience was a driving factor for clarity and accuracy in writing.

The second task allowed children to reinforce and revise how to write instructions by presenting the rules of handball which is our school sport.  Another form that children practised was the description of Polish sportsmen.  Students got to know how demanding it is to reach one’s goals, which we believed would motivate them in their future lives. Moreover, all the partner schools had a chance to widen their knowledge about one another’s famous sportsmen and sport in general. As far as the additional tasks are considered, children decided to make a film showing how to play handball. We also visited the cinema to watch a film and meet football players from our local team, which both improved their team work.

For the second task the teacher has begun by explaining that a “Testo regolativo” must be as clear and concise as possible, because it gives instructions, saying people what they can and what they can’t do.
Four types of this text have been used: school rules, a  recipe, the “Reader’s Rights”, by Daniel Pennac and a video game rules. After the reading of these different types of texts, children have written their own school rules and in order to do this, they have used progressive numbers.
After that, the children started to write the rules of some famous sports of their country.
At the end of this activity they have developed the following skills:
-developing the ability to analyse situations
-acquire an active, critical vision of reality
-recognize and use essential language (technical words)
-being able to make lists
-using objective language
-recognizing the different parts of language  cooperative learning

Ècole Marcel Lacoma
Each class chose a French Olympic athlete born in Guadeloupe and made his or her biography and medal count. Each class also presented his or her sport discipline (rules and values).
This work on Olympic athletes was very enriching because it allowed the children to work in a very important field: the organization and the management of the data. The children first went to look for information on the internet. We then pooled them and we made a first sort: those that interested us and those that did not interest us. We then structured them in order to realize our presentation form. The children produced a written document but also an "artistic" document about their athlete based on the information they collected, analyzed, sorted, organized and used.
